Shigeo Shinkawa, 97, of Spicewood died May 11, 2011. He was born in Niulii, Kohala, Hawaii, on May 19, 1913, to Jinzuchi and Mitsuyo Nakamura Shinkawa, the youngest of seven children.

He graduated from the University of Hawaii with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1936, a Master of Science degree in 1937 and Hahnemann Medical College in Philadelphia with a medical degree in 1942 specializing in ophthalmology. He engaged in a private practice in Honolulu; St. Charles, Mo., and Elkins, W.Va. He was certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology in 1948.

He served in the Army during the Korean conflict as a captain in the Army Medical Corps in both Korea and Japan for more than two years.

He loved to flyfish, making his own flies. He also was an enthusiastic woodworker and an avid reader of The New York Times on his computer and enjoyed camping. He retired from the Veterans Administration in 1979 after practicing with them in McKinney, San Fernando, Calif., and Temple.

Survivors include his children Paul M. Shinkawa of Austin, Sidney M. Shinkawa of Spicewood and Asa M. Shinkawa of Chuluota, Fla.; and grandchildren Tami, Anna, Fumiko and Wyatt.

He was preceded in death by his parents and in his wife Aiko Shigematsu Shinkawa in 1996.

A private service will be held at a later date at the Punchbowl Cemetery in Honolulu.
