Virgil Leroy Poulter, 83, died June 26, 2010, at his home in Granite Shoals. He was born March 27, 1927, in Ponca City, Okla. He was a retired professor and administrator at the University of Texas at Arlington.

He graduated from Ponca City High School in 1945. He received a bachelor of arts degree from Oklahoma State University, a master’s degree from the University of New Mexico and a doctorate from Louisiana State University.

He also did graduate work at the University of Oklahoma, the University of Texas and at the National University of Mexico in Mexico City. He taught Spanish at Edison High School in Tulsa, Okla., from 1954 to 1961. He joined the faculty of UT-Arlington in 1961 where he taught Spanish and linguistics until his retirement in 1992.

During his tenure at UT-Arlington, he was chairman of the department of foreign languages and linguistics from 1968 to 1977. After his retirement, he and his wife moved to Granite Shoals, where he was active in volunteer service for the American Cancer Society, for the Books for the Blind program at the Texas State Library and Archives in Austin, and for the Meals on Wheels program in Marble Falls and Granite Shoals.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Joana Poulter of Granite Shoals; sons Stephen Poulter of Wichita, Kan., Michael Poulter of Little Rock, Ark., Timothy Poulter of Norman, Okla., Christopher Poulter of Belton and Philip Poulter of Waco; daughter Teresa Patterson of Victor, Colo.; and grandchildren Kaycee Poulter, Scott Poulter, Allison Poulter, Austin Poulter, Eric Poulter, Katy Poulter, Ethan Poulter, Meredith McClurkan, Anthony McClurkan and Sarah Patterson.  He donated his body to the Willed Body Program at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio.

A memorial service is pending.
