An approximately 34-acre fire burned in northeastern Burnet County near Briggs for several hours last week before local firefighting agencies were able to control and extinguish the blaze on Saturday, Sept. 19. The fire was reportedly caused by outdoor cooking.
According to Burnet County Emergency Management Coordinator Ed Hashbarger, emergency personnel first responded to the scene of the fire at around 10:43 a.m. on Saturday near CR 210 and 214, about 5 miles southwest of Briggs.
The blaze was said to be fully contained by around 4:01 p.m. with the help of 37 personnel.
Responding agencies included the Texas Forest Service, Burnet County Office of Emergency Management, Northeastern Burnet County Fire Department, and East Lake Buchanan, Cassie, Burnet, Hoover Valley, and Bertram volunteer fire departments.
While some showers have made their way to the area over the last few days–with more on the horizon this fall–Hashbarger told DailyTrib that residents must be vigilant while dry conditions persist.
“We’re not past fire season yet,” he said. “Everyone needs to be aware that the burn ban is still in effect in Burnet County, even if we’ve had some wet weather.”
Though there has been rain in the forecast, Burnet County has remained exceptionally dry as of late. On Wednesday, Sept. 23, the county registered in the second-worst category of the Keetch-Byram Drought Index.
The KBDI is used to determine how dry an area is on a scale of 0-800, with Burnet County sitting at an average score of 668. Some portions of the county also registered in the driest category, with a KBDI as high as 720.

No Compensation You understand and agree that you will receive no compensation for the submission or use of your Submitted Content.
Indemnification You agree to indemnify, defend, and hold harmless Company, its affiliates, officers, directors, employees, and agents from any claims, damages, liabilities, losses, and expenses (including reasonable attorneys’ fees) arising from your breach of this Agreement or any third-party claims related to your Submitted Content.
Moral Rights and Publicity You waive any moral rights or rights of attribution in the Submitted Content to the extent permitted by law. Company may use your name, username, or likeness in connection with the Submitted Content if applicable.
Termination and Removal Company may, in its sole discretion, edit, refuse to post, or remove any Submitted Content at any time without notice. This Agreement survives any termination.
Governing Law This Agreement is governed by the laws of the State of Texas, without regard to conflict of laws principles. Any disputes shall be resolved exclusively in the courts located in Burnet County, Texas.
Entire Agreement This Agreement constitutes the entire understanding between the parties and supersedes all prior agreements. Modifications must be in writing. By submitting content, you acknowledge that you have read, understood, and agree to be bound by this Agreement.
