The city of Burnet is smoke testing sewer lines in the morning and early afternoon hours this week to help identify defective portions of the sewer system.

According to city staff, the testing will be conducted from 8 a.m.-3:30 p.m. on Aug. 10-14 and is part of routine sewer maintenance that will continue on a weekly basis throughout the fall.

Testing involves light smoke being blown into manhole covers to assist in identifying leaks or breaks in nearby lines.

“Smoke from rooftop vent stacks is normal during testing,” reads a statement from the city on Facebook. “It is normal to see lots of white/grey smoke around your neighborhood during smoke testing. Smoke coming from holes in the ground or from roof gutters is not normal and may indicate a defect. City staff will photograph and log any such defects.”

City staff added that the test will not impact residents beyond needing temporary access to manholes located along the sides or backs of nearby homes.

“Some sewer lines and manholes are located along sides or backyards, so city staff may need to access your property,” reads the statement. “You do not need to be present, and workers will not enter your home or disturb your property.”

As the sewer tests continue, the city says that it will provide updated maps and notifications to affected residents. For more information, contact the city at 512-756-2402 and be sure to regularly check the city’s Facebook page here.
