Those interested in serving as a trustee on the Burnet Consolidated Independent School District board have until 4 p.m. Oct. 27 to apply for the Place 5 position left vacant after the death of longtime Trustee Andy Feild on Sept. 19. Feild served a total of 26 years on the board, 18 as president. The next election for the seat is May 6, 2024.

ELECTION INFORMATION

• The appointed trustee is permitted to file to run for Place 5 during the May 2024 trustee election if they choose to do so. The winner will serve the remaining one-year term of Place 5 until the May 2025 election.

• The winner of Place 5 in May 2024 is permitted to file to run for the seat during the May 2025 trustee election if they choose to do so. The winner will be elected to a new, three-year term and would not have to run again until 2028.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

According to the Texas Election Code, an individual is eligible to be elected or appointed to a public school board if the individual:

  • is a U.S. citizen;
  • is 18 years of age on the first day of the term to be filled at election or on the date of appointment, as applicable;
  • has not been determined by a final judgment of a court exercising probate of jurisdiction to be totally mentally incapacitated or partially mentally incapacitated with the right to vote;
  • has not been finally convicted of a felony from which the individual has not been pardoned or otherwise released from the resulting disabilities;
  • has resided continuously in the state for 12 months and in the territory from which the office is elected for six months immediately preceding the following dates: for an independent candidate, the date of the regular filing deadline for a candidate’s application for a place on the ballot; for a write-in candidate, the date of the election at which the candidate’s name is written in; or, for an appointee to an office, the date the appointment is made
  • is registered to vote in the territory from which the office is elected on the date described above;
  • satisfies any other eligibility requirements prescribed by law for the office.
