Superintendent Keith McBurnett has made it official that this will be his last year with the Burnet Consolidated Independent School District. He informed school board trustees a year ago that he planned to retire on June 30, 2024. He sent an official letter, released Tuesday, Sept. 12, announcing his decision to BCISD teachers and staff.
“While I look forward to my eventual retirement, I will deeply miss the day-to-day interactions with our students, families, staff, and the community,” he wrote. “This community cares about education, and I will always care deeply about the Burnet CISD community. Thank you for the opportunity to serve; it’s been an absolute privilege.”
McBurnett has 30 years of experience in education, the last 12 as BCISD superintendent. In 2021, the board gave him a raise to $205,000 a year and extended his contract through June 2025.
McBurnett was deputy superintendent of Pflugerville ISD in 2011 when Burnet resident Mark Kincaid called to tell him the BCISD job had opened up.
“That was well before (Kincaid) was ever (Burnet High School) principal or a board member, and he encouraged me to apply,” McBurnett wrote in his letter. “Little did I know then, but that turned out to be some of the best advice I have ever received, and my personal and professional life have greatly benefited ever since.”
McBurnett and wife Pat moved with their two sons to Burnet in March 2012. Both of their children graduated from Burnet High School.
“We have both treasured all of the friendships and connections we have made over the years in the district and throughout the community,” McBurnett wrote. “Pat and I will continue to live and volunteer in the community, and we will always be huge supporters of the district and some of the biggest fans of the Bulldogs and Lady Dawgs.”
His retirement plans include working as an executive coach for novice and experienced superintendents through the Texas Association of School Administrators.
The BCISD board plans to immediately begin a search for the next superintendent.
