Apply for PEC scholarships through March 20
Students have until March 20 to apply for Pedernales Electric Cooperative scholarships. The 2023 application window opened Wednesday, Feb. 1.
Each year, PEC awards $100,000 in scholarships to students in its service area to attend a college, university, technical school, or trade school. One scholarship is also given to an adult seeking further education. Scholarships are in the amounts of $2,750 or $2,500. The adult award is $2,500.
The program is funded by unclaimed property returned to PEC by the state of Texas.
“Providing these scholarships is one of the many ways the cooperative works to strengthen our communities,” PEC Community Outreach Specialist Celeste Mikeska said in a media release.
Students must be a graduating public, private, or home school senior whose parent or legal guardian is a PEC member in good standing. The adult recipient must be a PEC member or reside in a household served by PEC and in good standing.
The online application asks for grade-point average, SAT and ACT scores (if applicable), and employment history (if any). It also asks for a written statement on leadership.
“Please tell us about your work experience, community service, and/or extracurricular activities,” reads the question, which is 25 percent of the total score. “Some examples are organizations/activities in which you have participated or leadership positions held.”
A statement about financial need and the impact of the scholarship on the student’s education is also required and represents another 25 percent of the total score.
An essay question, also 25 percent, asks students to write about a time they did not succeed.
“What did you learn from the experience,” the application asks.
