Joseph Cox was named the new band director at Burnet High School. He has served as an assistant band director for the past seven years. Ian Young was promoted to associate band director. He is currently an assistant director teaching symphonic and concert band.

Cox, a 21-year educator, takes over the top job after the previous director, Andrew Hicks, accepted the job as director of bands for Magnolia West High School.

As a staff member of the Burnet High School band program, Cox implemented a state-of-the-art percussion lab, one of the first of its kind. He’s nationally recognized for his teaching style and has helped lead the Burnet Esprit de Corps, made up of the marching band and Highlandettes dance squad, to several University Interscholastic League state marching contests.

In 2020, the group won a bronze medal at state.

Young is in his first year with the Burnet Consolidated Independent School District and his fourth overall teaching but has traveled with the Esprit de Corps to the state marching contest the past three times as an assistant director (2021) or a consultant.

He is considered an expert field show coordinator, according to Burnet High School officials.
