MARBLE FALLS — When the Faith Academy of Marble Falls football team took to the Pony Stadium field Aug. 26, the Flames expected to only face CenterPoint. But Mother Nature also came to play.

Still, she was kind enough to stay out of the game until the Flames took a 6-0 lead midway through the first quarter.

The Flames forced a turnover and recovered the football at the 50. Four plays later, head coach Stephen Shipley called for a reverse with a pass with Garrett Henderson throwing the football to Cameron Ellenberger for a 40-yard touchdown.

And then came the lightning and weather delay.

The coaches discussed resuming the game Saturday. But Shipley said the Flames and Center Point had two issues: No officials were available to officiate the contest, and Marble Falls Youth Football and Cheer will host games at Pony Stadium throughout the day.

Since so little of the contest was played, Shipley said it would not count as a win for his team. Still, he said, he was encouraged by much of what he saw on the field.

The Center Point offense was running the football more than the Flames anticipated, and its defense was sending different players on blitzes. So during the delay, coaches developed ways to counter the offensive runners and blitzes.

“We were able to get on the board and make adjustments on how they were playing us,” Shipley said. “We definitely saw some things we could take advantage of. We just never got back on the field.”

Also during the short time on the field, Faith’s Preston Richardson intercepted a Center Point pass, while Dawson Jordan caused and recovered a fumble.

Faith Academy travels to Boerne Geneva on Saturday, Sept. 3, with a 7 p.m. kickoff.
