SMITHWICK MILLS — A fire destroyed a home Aug. 4; however, a man and at least one pet managed to escape after neighbors alerted the homeowner to smoke pouring out of the house in Burnet County, officials say.
The blaze was reported sometime before 8 p.m. in the 100 block of Bonnie Lane off CR 343A.
The fire also destroyed a deck, an attached workshop and a tractor.
“His neighbor actually informed him that his house was on fire, so he got himself and his pets out of there,” said Marble Falls Area Volunteer Fire Chief Mike Phillips.
Officials said the cause of the fire is unknown.
“(The fire) apparently started back to the rear of the home towards the shop area,” he said. “By the time we got there, three-quarters of the home was already involved in flames.”
The fire flared up a day later about 7 a.m., and crews responded and snuffed the blaze.
