One dead after attempted rescue in Llano River at Badu Park

LLANO — One person has reportedly died June 22 after he and several others, including city workers, attempted to rescue a female victim who slid into the Llano River in Badu Park during a fishing trip.

According to the Llano Police Department, the drowning victim was identified as 52-year-old Brian Holberg of Victoria.

Witnesses at the scene said the incident happened at about 2:30 p.m. on the east side of the park north of the river.

When the female entered the water, she became caught up in the current, prompting Holberg to go into the water and attempt to help her to shore, a witness said.

A nearby Llano City worker attempted to assist with the rescue followed by a number of other city employees and bystanders.

The female was successfully pulled from the water.
