Horseshoe Bay residents were saddened to learn of the recent passing of their former neighbor Helen Whittington O’Neill.
Helen, who was born in Central Texas in 1924 and spent most of her adult years in Houston before retiring to the Hill Country, enjoyed her time in Horseshoe Bay and was a member of the Marble Falls Senior Activity Center. She also volunteered with the Math Olympics program at the Boys and Girls Club of the Highland Lakes in Marble Falls, where she was feted with a surprise 89th birthday party.
During her earlier years, Helen was an avid tennis player. Along with a dozen other families, she and her late husband, Jim, helped their neighbor George Mitchell found the Houston Racquet Club. They were also longtime members of the River Oaks Dance Club, and Helen was active in the Tynewood Garden Club and the St. Cecilia Altar Society.
In their later years, Helen and Jim spent much time traveling in Switzerland and Germany, their favorite destinations. They also spent several months every year in the San Francisco Bay area.
Helen was a true force of nature and will be missed by her family and friends. A private memorial service is planned in Horseshoe Bay.
