What do you wish to accomplish?

I support open government, and to that respect, my phone number and email address will be accessible to everyone. I will have an open-door policy and will seek input from the citizens of Burnet County regarding their needs and concerns. In today’s economy, and the future somewhat uncertain, we need to maintain a rainy-day fund for unforeseen emergencies. I believe spending should be prioritized with police, fire and EMS at the top, infrastructure with safety issues next. Public safety, i.e., police, fire and EMS, is critical and should not be compromised. Infrastructure of roads and bridges should be studied and a long-term plan developed taking into consideration the safety aspects of our infrastructure. I would like to see Burnet County and all cities within develop a task force to find ways to consolidate services when applicable, i.e., public safety, reasonable insurance rates, and transportation improvements. We know Burnet County will grow. All cities and the commissioners court need to work together for the future growth that we know is coming to Burnet County. Determine any areas of wasteful spending such as whether consolidation of county services is possible. Under rare circumstances would I ever agree to raise taxes. We need to protect and preserve the Highland Lakes. We all know that the Highland Lakes are the lifeblood of Burnet County. The recent droughts emphasized the need to continue to fight to maintain as much water in our lakes as possible, holding LCRA responsible for protecting our water, a most precious resource.

Why are you the most qualified candidate?

Public service of 39 years has given me the opportunity to work with city, county, state and federal governmental agencies. For many years, as APA president, I represented the Austin Police Association members before the Austin City Council as well as the Texas Legislature on law enforcement issues, budgeting and employee needs. I have also represented the two largest police organizations in the state of Texas (CLEAT and TMPA) on numerous occasions before the Texas Legislature. Numerous times I have testified before hearing committees in both the Texas House and Senate. Therefore, I am very familiar with the inner workings of governmental agencies. I have 32 years of supervisory and management experience with the Austin Police Department as well as with the Texas Department of Transportation. My experience as a talk show host on KLBJ radio in Austin for 28-plus years has given me an extreme insight of the serious problems of this country. Solving these problems begins on a local basis.

Experience: My experiences both professionally and in my volunteer service have well prepared me to be commissioner. I have been employed by the Burnet Fire Department for 16 years where I hold the rank of deputy chief. Prior to becoming one of the first two paid firefighters in the city of Burnet, I was co-owner of two successful small businesses. I am currently the vice-president of the Burnet CISD Board of Trustees where I am serving my second term. These experiences combined have given me the skills necessary to manage budgets, personnel, planning and implementation of projects both large and small.

Party affiliation: Republican

What do you wish to accomplish?

We are blessed to live in Burnet County, and my greatest goal is to help prepare the county for the growth I feel is inevitable while at the same time maintaining the qualities that make Burnet County such a special place to live. I am for transparent government that is always mindful that the money we spend belongs to our taxpayers, and we have a duty to allocate it prudently. I am a strong supporter of police and emergency services and will work to ensure the citizens of Burnet County have coverage and accessibility within these services. There will be a precinct-wide assessment of our county roads to prioritize needs and make improvements accordingly. I will be a full-time, accessible commissioner.

Why are you the most qualified candidate?

In addition to the skills gained through my professional history, I am the only candidate who has spent over 25 years serving the citizens in Burnet County. I have served terms as a director of the Burnet Chamber of Commerce, the Burnet County Fair and Rodeo and the Burnet Public Facilities Corporations. I am currently serving my second term on the Burnet CISD Board of Trustees. I have the experience, skills and proven dedication to my community. I will represent Burnet County with integrity, honesty and dedication.
