Abilene Wylie starts strong, overwhelms Burnet 43-23

ABILENE — The Abilene Wylie Bulldogs took an early lead against the Burnet Bulldogs on Sept. 4 and never really looked back.
Abilene Wylie beat Burnet 43-23. The loss drops Burnet to 1-1 on the season.
Burnet got off to a slow start while Abilene Wylie (2-0) exploded out of the gate, scoring on five of its six possessions in the first half. Abilene Wylie had the ball for its seventh possession of the first half when halftime arrived.
The first half pretty much belonged to Abilene Wylie. It quickly jumped out to a 14-3 lead with touchdowns by Brooks Pepper and Tyler Ward. While Ward took most of the snaps for Abilene Wylie, the team used a platoon of running backs and even receivers on the night.
Abilene Wylie added two more touchdowns in the first, a nine-yard run by Cason Grant and one by Josh Novil. Cameron Hanna wrapped up the first half with a 26-yard field goal to send Abilene Wylie into the locker room at the half leading 30-3.
But Burnet didn’t roll over and give up.
In the second half, Burnet came out and struck quickly.
Koby Edwards in the quarterback spot connected with Steven Gallardo for a 57-yard Burnet touchdown at the 9:54 mark to make it 30-10. But Abilene Wylie drove 73 yards on its next possession to go up 36-10.
Edwards and Gallardo hooked up again, this time for a 54-yard strike cutting back into the Abilene Wylie lead to make it 36-17.
The Burnet offense showed it could score and score quickly, but the Bulldogs struggled to keep Abilene Wylie out of the end zone.
Abilene Wylie added one more touchdown on a Cason Grant 32-yard dash to make it 43-10. But Burnet’s Koby Edwards wasn’t done.
He hit Joel Jackson for a 19-yard touchdown pass with 3:45 left in the game. It was the last score of the game as Abilene Wylie won, 43-23.
