BURNET — Local families interested in registering their preschooler in Head Start can now apply for the 2015-16 school year.

Williamson-Burnet County Opportunities, which oversees Head Start programs in the two counties, announced that it is accepting applications for the early childhood education program. The program is open to ages infant to 5 years.

“While financial need is a consideration, participation and eligibility are based on many factors, and we encourage all residents to apply,” program director Charlene Burgess said.

Officials said Head Start provides valuable education experiences to help children develop basic skills and learn concepts necessary for successful school performance in kindergarten, and, ideally, life.

Program teachers for 3- to 5-year-olds are degree-certified, officials said. The curriculum and classrooms meet a wide range of needs for each family, including low student-to-teacher ratios and healthy meals provided at no cost. Head Start also provides families with health, social and other services that are responsive to families’ ethnic, cultural and linguistic heritage, officials added.

To be eligible, parents of registering children must reside in Williamson or Burnet counties. Proof of residency includes documents for mortgage, rent or deed; or utility bills. Go to or call (512) 948-7609 to locate the nearest Head Start program or for more information.
