Virginia Nichols VanBerg, 95, of Buchanan Dam died Feb. 9, 2015
Virginia Nichols VanBerg, 95, of Buchanan Dam passed away Feb. 9, 2015. Mrs. VanBerg was born Aug. 11, 1919, in College Station, the daughter of Charles Benjamin Nichols and William Estelle Jones.
She spent many happy years growing up in San Marcos with her five sisters and brother. She was an avid swimmer and an accomplished knitter, sewed many of her family’s clothes and loved to dance. Virginia attended Lutheran Junior College and was employed by the law office of Darden, Esquire, in Conroe, Texas. She also worked for the Texas Department of Transportation.
Virginia fell in love with and married Charles VanBerg in 1942 in Austin. She loved children, and with complications from early pregnancies, they decided to adopt to begin their family. In a few years, she was able to successfully carry to term two of their own. Later in their life together, they adopted yet again. While Texas was their home, his work transferred their family across the country as well as to South America, where they lived for eight years.
She moved home to Texas with her husband when he retired, just across from where they had their first date in 1941 on Inks Lake. After the death of her husband, Charles, she has lived with her son Michael and his wife, Kathleen, in their home until her death.
Survivors include one sister, Mattie Eva Dinick of Cypress; daughter, Joellyn VanBerg of Miami; sons, Charles VanBerg of Mansfield, David VanBerg of Mineral Wells and Michael VanBerg; along with their children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, other relatives and close friends.
A service is noon Feb. 14 at Clements-Wilcox Funeral Home in Burnet. Interment will follow at Lakeland Hills Memorial Park.
