FROM STAFF REPORTS

MARBLE FALLS —  Two teens are dead, including a Marble Falls High School graduate, and two others are recovering from serious injuries after the vehicle they were in left the roadway and struck a tree on a rural road just outside Marble Falls, according to a report from the Texas Department of Public Safety.

The accident happened about 10:30 p.m. Feb. 5 on CR 120, about 5½ miles northwest of the city limits, Trooper Robbie Barrera said.

The driver of the 1998 Dodge pickup, 18-year-old Robert Groth of Granite Shoals, was pronounced dead at the scene, along with 15-year-old Ramie Griffin Jr. of Sedona, Arizona. Groth was a Marble Falls High School graduate, Marble Falls Independent School District officials confirmed.

The report stated the passenger was not wearing a seatbelt, Barrera said.

Two more passengers — Ezekiel Flemmer, 17, of Granite Shoals and Zachery Trueblood, a juvenile, also of Granite Shoals — were taken to University Medical Center-Austin in serious condition with incapacitating injuries, the report stated. They were both wearing seatbelts, according to the report.

“(The) driver failed to negotiate a curve in the road due to high speed,” according to the report. “(The) vehicle left (the) road on (the) west side; (the) driver overcorrected to the east, losing control.”

Barrera said the vehicle left the roadway, struck a wire fence, continued into a pasture, struck a tree and caught on fire.

“They were pronounced dead at the scene,” Barrera said of the victims. “They were transported to the (medical examiner’s) office.”

Groth and Griffin were pronounced dead by Burnet County Pct. 3 Justice of the Peace Peggy Simon.

The investigation is continuing.

MFISD school officials say they are offering emotional support for students who knew the graduate who died.

“A student who is upset has a hard time learning in the classroom,” MFISD spokesman Bruce Peckover said. “Whether it’s an accident situation or other life situation, whenever we have a student in need, we offer counseling and other support.

“Whether directly related or they happened to know them, if they’re upset we need to address those needs,” he added.
