MARBLE FALLS — The Faith Academy of Marble Falls girls basketball team won its 88th consecutive district game, beating the Texas School for the Deaf 70-18 on Dec. 2.

The Lady Flames led 17-4 in the first quarter and 44-7 at the half. That advantage triggered a running clock in the second half that only stopped for timeouts.

The Lady Flames play in District 4-3A of the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools.

Faith head coach Jerry English gave his players one directive regarding their 8-4 opponent: “Let’s come play with our A game and see if we have enough,” he said.

The Lady Rangers’ offense revolves around 5-foot-10 junior center Gunita Schmidjorg, who works around the paint. She matched up against Faith freshman center Sedona Prince, who stands 6-6.

“That happens to be our strength with Sedona in the middle,” English said. “Schmidjorg has a real good ball fake. Sedona didn’t (jump when it wasn’t necessary), and she clogged the middle up. Schmidjorg was going to have a hard time shooting over Sedona.”

Schmidjorg finished with two points.

Faith sophomore Jayla Reeves led all scorers with 20 points.

“Jayla had a solid game,” English said. “She did a lot of other things. She was so aggressive on defense and got a lot of steals.”

The Lady Flames travel to Lorena to play in the Vicki Mitchell-Lauren Timmons Classic on Dec. 4 and 6. They begin against Waco High at 2 p.m. at Lorena High School, 1 Leopard Lane in Lorena.

“I think it’s very exciting to play people you don’t know anything about or heard about them,” English said.
