MARBLE FALLS — It didn’t take long for the Burnet High School girls basketball team to force its will on Marble Falls on Dec. 2.

The Lady Dawgs scored 13 points in the first quarter for an eight-point lead and limited the Lady Mustangs to scoring no more than eight points in each period en route to a 60-33 victory.

“Everybody played hard,” Burnet head coach Doug Messer said. “I think we did some smart things, and we still have a long ways to go.”

He commended the Lady Mustangs for trimming the deficit to 17-13 at the half. They did that by playing pressure defense that resulted in buckets.

“Marble Falls did a good job in the first half of getting us messed up,” Messer said.

In the second half, the Lady Dawgs returned the favor. Burnet’s defense made the Lady Mustangs uncomfortable. In short, turnovers led to quick buckets for the Lady Dawgs.

What pleased Messer was the number of Lady Dawgs who scored. Of the 14 on the roster, 11 contributed in the scoring column. Senior guard Riley Scott led all scorers with 23 points.

“I think we’re learning to be more than Riley,” the coach said. “It’s nice to have a go-to player. And we’re getting more from others.”

That includes fastbreak buckets from junior guards Shaylah Hullum and Afabiana Brooks. Senior posts Rose Bailey and Sarah Poe played well in the lanes on both sides of the court.

“We’re hitting some big shots and controlling the ball,” Messer sad. “Poe was big hitting the boards with Poe.”
