BASKETBALL: Lady Flames start tourney with win; Lady Dawgs open season with victory

BULVERDE — The Faith Academy of Marble Falls girls basketball team began the Bulverde Bracken tournament with a 77-57 victory against San Antonio Christian on Nov. 13.

The Lady Flames (2-1) started the game with a 19-11 lead that went to 35-23 by the half.

Faith head coach Jerry English said San Antonio Christian (2-1) gave his team a good challenge because of its full-court defense and the way it attacked the Faith zone.

“Which is impressive this early in the season,” he said. “We don’t get enough of (the full-court defense).”

All but one Lady Flame scored, including senior guard Taylor Denton, who had been sidelined for the last two games. While Denton dropped in seven points, her assists-to-turnover ration was 9-to-4.

English believes Denton, Jayla Reeves and Sarah Williams will give Faith the ability to play different styles because of their skill sets. Denton is known for her drives to the basket, while Reeves likes to shoot long jumpers and Williams is a cross between the two.

In addition, post players Hannah Cozby and Sedona Prince are showing a nice high-low game in the zone, the coach said.

Once Faith led by 30 points, English substituted freely.

“It was a great night,” he said. “We did not get anybody hurt or dinged up.”
