BURNET — The Burnet Bulldogs are now headed to the playoffs after a 59-35 district win over the Lampasas Badgers on Nov. 7.

The victory gives Burnet (8-2 overall) a 4-1 record in District 13-4A Division I, which ties them at the top with Waco La Vega. But with La Vega beating Burnet on Oct. 31, the Pirates will enter the playoffs as the No. 1 seed with Burnet as the No. 2.

Burnet will play Taylor in a bi-district contest at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 14 at Kelly Reeves Stadium, 10211 W. Palmar Lane in Austin.

Against Lampasas, Burnet’s Brock Foster put on a stellar running performance with 207 yards on 23 carries. The Bulldogs’ Austin Moore connected several times on the night with one of his favorite targets, Joel Johnson, to give the Badgers fits.

Though Burnet won with a strong finish, Lampasas kept badgering the Bulldogs through the first half and a good portion of the second.

The Bulldogs started off strong after capitalizing on a Lampasas fumble on its first possession. Burnet only needed to cover 25 yards for the score, which Foster added on a four-yard run. But Lampasas answered right back on its next drive. Lampasas missed the extra point, and Burnet had a 7-6 lead.

On Burnet’s next possession, Moore and Johnson connected for a 67-yard touchdown pass, putting the Bulldogs up 14-6. But, again, Lampasas answered.

This time, Collin Bowen broke free for a 54-yard touchdown run. The extra point failed again, but Lampasas was keeping it close at 14-12.

Big plays continued as Moore and Johnson connected again for a 26-yard touchdown pass, and Burnet went up 21-12.

Lampasas’ Cale Walker made Burnet pay for a turnover when he took the ball on a 47-yard ramble into the end zone. The Badgers added a 2-point conversion to cut into Burnet’s lead, 21-20.

A Moore-to-Cody Johnson touchdown pass extended Burnet’s lead a bit at 28-20 as the first half came to a close.

In the second half, the Bulldogs began to pull away from Lampasas. Burnet added a touchdown on its first drive in the third, and a little later, Alex Melvin kicked a 30-yard field goal for a 38-20 lead.

Lampasas added two more touchdowns with a couple Burnet scores smashed in between them.  One of the Burnet scoring drives included big plays from Darius Johnson (44-yard run) and the Moore-to-Johnson combination (28-yard pass and 17-yard touchdown pass.)

Burnet’s Eric Walker returned to the field against Lampasas after missing several games because of injury. But he showed no signs of of rust; just ask the Badgers he dragged along on several plays, including a 10-yard touchdown run that put Burnet up 59-35.

Walker ended the night with 71 yards on 10 carries.

  1. It’s a co-district championship for the Bulldogs and LaVega. LaVega represents the district as the no. 1 seed with the head-to-head win.
