MARBLE FALLS — Faith Academy’s early struggles against Central Texas Christian put the Flames in a hole they couldn’t escape Oct. 31 in a 41-15 loss.

Although it didn’t keep them from fighting like mad in the second half.

Running back Jonathan Bryer broke through the Lions’ defense for a 53-yard touchdown at the 2:27 mark in the third quarter for the Flames’ first touchdown.

Bryer rushed 30 times for 178 yards against the Lions.

Quarterback Magnum Burcham accounted for the Flames’ other touchdown. With 1:11 remaining in the game, Burcham tucked the ball and ran 15 yards for the score. On a bit of trickery, Burcham caught the extra-point attempt from Rawley Jackson.

Central Texas Christian rushed for 298 yards against Faith Academy and added 70 yards through the air.

“I felt like we could capitalize on the way we played (Halletsville) Sacred Heart (Oct. 17),” head coach Russ Roberts said. “We worked hard, just did not do it.”

The Flames’ offense made 15 first downs against the Lions, but again, fumbles quickly ended drives for Faith Academy. The Flames’ first two drives ended on fumbles and allowed the Lions to jump to a 21-0 lead in the first quarter.

The Flames returned some speed to their roster in junior Jonathan Reyes, who had been out since the first game of the season with an injured elbow. Reyes returned three kickoffs for 46 yards, rushed once for eight yards and recovered a fumble forced by teammate Colten Hubbell.

“It gives us a little bit of speed back,” Roberts said of Reyes. “We didn’t know we were going to have him until Wednesday at practice. Had we known that, it would have changed the game plan and we would try to take advantage of him.”

The Flames finish the season Nov. 7 at home against John Paul II at 7:30 p.m. at Pony Stadium, 1511 Pony Circle Drive.
