William Steve Massey, 61, of Oatmeal dies Oct. 11, 2014
William Steve Massey, born Nov. 4, 1952, in Burnet County to V.W. and Alma Faye (Moore) Massey, passed away Oct. 11, 2014, at his home in Oatmeal.
He is survived by his wife, Jennie Cross Massey; daughter, April Massey Owens and husband John; son, Jason Massey and wife Sarah; sister, Vickie Massey Hendrickson and husband Jim; brother, Stan Massey and wife Kathy; six grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Steve was preceded in death by his parents.
Steve spent the first five years of his childhood in Oatmeal and then moved with his family to Burnet, where he graduated from high school in 1971. In 1973, he became a firefighter in the Austin Fire Department, where he worked until his retirement in 1997.
Steve had a passion for helping people and, in 2003, moved to Benin, Africa, where he worked for 18 months drilling water wells in remote villages. In recent months, Steve had been working along with fellow Christians to revive the water well mission. His dream was to not only give clean water but to tell of the living water of Jesus Christ and His saving grace.
Visitation is 6-8 p.m. Oct. 13 at First Baptist Church in Bertram. A funeral service is 10 a.m. Oct. 14 at the church with the Rev. Gordon Bergstrom officiating. Burial will follow at Mount Zion Cemetery near Bertram.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Well Project in care of First Baptist Church in Bertram.
