Marble Falls JV 28, Cameron Yoe 6

CEDAR PARK — The Marble Falls High School junior varsity football team beat Cameron Yoe 28-6 on Oct. 2.

The game was called midway through the fourth quarter because of lightning. The Mustangs played the Yoemen because their game against Cedar Park Vista Ridge was cancelled Sept. 18, also due to lightning.

Marble Falls took a 14-0 lead in the first quarter. Austin Pegues scored on a 52-yard scoop and scamper when teammate Robert Atkinson blocked a punt. Gavino Tinajera added the extra point.

Marble Falls special teams were at it again on the ensuing kick. Micah Wise recovered the pooch kick.

That led to the a 30-yard touchdown catch by Heath Dooley from Robert Atkinson on a reverse pass. The extra point was good.

After Matthew Wright intercepted a pass, Atkinson called his own number on a four-yard touchdown run with 3 minutes 31 seconds left in the half for a 21-0 advantage.

With 46 seconds remaining, the Yoemen scored their only touchdown of the contest on a 15-yard pass.

The Mustangs got it back in the third quarter. Damian Sanchez scored on a one-yard plunge that was set up with a Pegues interception.

Coach Kyle Futrell said the game turned in the Mustangs’ favor for good when they blocked a punt and recovered the pooch kick on the kickoff.

“We scored two touchdowns in 13 seconds,” he said.

MIDDLE SCHOOL VOLLEYBALL

Liberty Hill def. Burnet 7th A 15-25, 20-25 on Sept. 29

BURNET — The Burnet Middle School volleyball team played five matches in two days Sept. 27 and 29.

The Lady Pups lost to Liberty Hill in district play Sept. 29 after being the runners-up at their own tournament Sept. 27.

The Lady Pups lost to Marble Falls 13-25, 18-25 in the championship and again in bracket play 20-25, 22-25. Burnet beat Liberty Hill 25-17, 25-16 and Llano 25-9, 25-7 to begin the tournament.

“We came out on fire and really dominated against the first two opponents of Llano and Liberty Hill,” Burnet coach Glen Hafley said. “With great serving, we were able to really control the tempo and easily get wins. Then, as the day went on, we seemed to lose a little bit of the fire and were just unable to get over the hump against Marble Falls.

“(On Sept. 29), we had some trouble with serves throughout, and, in the end, that would be enough to keep us from getting a victory. We had flashes of great play that helped us go on a run and pull close, but, in the end, it was just not enough to get the win,” he added.

RECORDS: Burnet 7th A is 5-3 overall and 3-1 in district.

BURNET — The Burnet Middle School eighth-grade A team lost to Liberty Hill on Sept. 29 after finishing fourth in its own tournament over the weekend with a 0-3-1 record.

In district play, the Lady Pups (2-5-1 overall, 2-2 district) lost to Liberty Hill 13-25, 21-25.

“With a bit of a slow start, the girls really fought hard throughout the match. Even in the first game with the score not being as close as the second, the girls fought hard and made Liberty Hill work for every point. We had very good play at the net from several girls and also had some very good digs against Liberty Hills attack,” Burnet coach Glen Hafley said.

In tournament play, Burnet tied Llano 25-23, 15-25 and lost to Liberty Hill 22-25, 22-25, Marble Falls 19-25, 13-25 and Llano 25-22, 16-25, 21-25.

“I really felt like the girls played some very good volleyball,” Hafley said. “Even though the win column didn’t show it, I really felt like we competed very well against very strong competition. We showed a lot of heart throughout the day and really competed against every team we faced.”
