AUSTIN — Faith Academy of Marble Falls cross-country runner Sophie McCannon placed first, while Abraham Lewis set a school record at the Austin St. Andrew’s meet Sept. 13.

McCannon won the girls varsity race in 12 minutes 2.9 seconds.

“Sophie ran a great race and was mentally ready for the sloppy conditions,” said her father and head coach Steve McCannon. “She stuck to the game plan and looked strong throughout the race. I am proud of her. Sophie has a hunger to get better and is willing to sacrifice and work for it. She made a strong statement today to our rivals.”

Lewis, who was competing in his first 5-kilometer race, set a new school record for the boys by finishing a 3.2-mile course in 20:15.30.

“Abraham ran well,” the coach said. “He is learning more every day about cross country. The sky is the limit with him. I am really proud of him.”

Three Lady Flames missed the meet because they were taking a college entrance exam. That’s why McCannon was the only varsity runner.
