AUSTIN — The Faith Academy of Marble Falls football team relied on its running game and defensive stops for its first win of the season Sept. 11.
The Flames beat the Austin Hyde Park junior varsity squad 19-0.
Flames running back Jonathan Bryer rushed for about 130 yards and had two touchdowns to lead Faith Academy.
“Bryer is a guy who will make some yardage even if there isn’t a hole, and he did that two to three times tonight,” Faith head coach Russ Roberts said.
Bryer’s first touchdown came with seven minutes remaining in the second quarter from 1 yard out.
Hyde Park threatened to tie the Flames (1-2) on their opening drive in the third quarter. However, Faith Academy stopped Hyde Park on fourth down at its own 5-yard line. The Flames then took up almost nine minutes on a 15-play drive that ended with Bryer rushing for a 9-yard touchdown on fourth down.
“It wasn’t real pretty, but we were aggressive and we got after it,” Roberts said. “We did the things we needed to do to win.”
The Flames officially put the game away on Hyde Park’s next possession when Gavin Henderson picked off a fourth-and-16 pass attempt and ran it 35 yards for a touchdown with 3:07 remaining in the game.
The Flames next game is noon Sept. 20 against St. Anthony at Incarnate Word Stadium, 4301 Broadway St. in San Antonio.
