MARBLE FALLS — A dominating first half propelled the Marble Falls High School football team to a 40-7 win against Boerne High on Sept. 12.

In six first-half possessions, the Mustangs (2-1) scored five touchdowns. Meanwhile, the Marble Falls defense was just as dominant. Senior defensive back Bryce Fry snatched two interceptions, while sophomore defensive back Sam Harkins had one. Even the Mustangs special teams ensured the Greyhounds did not convert on a field-goal attempt

Marble Falls head coach Matt Green called it the most complete game his team has played this season.

“We came into this one banged up,” he said. “We had to play a lot of different kids in a lot of different positions.”

From the start, Marble Falls seized control. The Mustangs forced the Greyhounds, who are led by Tennessee commit senior quarterback Quinten Dormady, to punt on their opening series.

Then, Marble Falls junior quarterback Brennen Wooten led Marble Falls on an 11-play drive that ended when he ran in for a 10-yard touchdown. Sophomore kicker Gavino Tinajera added the extra point.

The next Boerne series ended on a Harkins interception. Wooten turned that drive into a touchdown when he hit senior Royale Brown for a 23-yard score for a 14-0 advantage in the first quarter.

Fry got his first interception on a tipped ball. Brown made the Greyhounds pay when he ran in a 30-yard touchdown for a 20-0 lead in the second quarter.

Just when it looked like the Greyhounds were going to put points on the board, Fry got his second interception and returned it 100 yards for a touchdown. But a holding call took away the points.

Still, Brown ended the ensuing drive with a 12-yard touchdown.

Wooten added one more score, a 4-yard run, for a 33-0 halftime lead.

Green said the reason the Mustangs defense shut out the opponent the first half was because it mixed in different coverages that caused Dormady to hold the ball too long. That created opportunities for Marble Falls to have three sacks in addition to the turnovers.

“He couldn’t read the coverages,” the coach said. “We blitzed, and we were hitting them. To (defensive coordinator Chad) Bishop and the defense, what a great job tonight.”

The Mustangs started the second half the way they ended the first. Wooten hit sophomore Cade Cool for a 19-yard touchdown.

Boerne added a meaningless touchdown in the fourth quarter.

Marble Falls junior linebacker Eric Daughtery recovered a second-half fumble for a total of four turnovers on the night.

Wooten threw for more than 200 yards, while hitting seven different receivers. Brown ran for more than 100 yards, all unofficial.

Green said he realized the offensive numbers might be below the averages of the first two weeks. Still, he couldn’t argue with the result.

“You have to play who’s on the schedule,” the coach said. “Boerne has a Division I quarterback and receivers who can run.

The Mustangs begin District 25-5A play against Cedar Park Vista Ridge at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 19 at Gupton Stadium, located on South Vista Ridge Boulevard at East Park Street in Cedar Park.
