SAN ANTONIO — Not even lightning could keep the Marble Falls High School football team from earning its first victory of the season.

The Mustangs (1-1) defeated San Antonio Jay 60-43 on Sept. 6

Mustangs head coach Matt Green said the team made vast improvements after its Week 1 loss to cross-county rival Burnet.

After Jay took a 14-0 lead, Marble Falls answered with a two-play touchdown drive with senior running back Tyler Ryan running it in from eight yards out. The key play of the drive came when junior quarterback Brennen Wooten found junior receiver Jacob Metcalf for a 72-yard pass. The extra point was missed.

On its next possession, Jay was forced to punt and pinned Marble Falls at its own two.

Wooten promptly led a 14-play drive that ended when he found his brother, sophomore receiver Aaron Wooten, for a seven-yard touchdown pass. Senior defensive lineman Melvin Sanchez’s kick was good to trim the deficit to 14-13. During the drive, Marble Falls converted plays on third down. The key play was a 44-yard pass to sophomore running back Daven Manning.

Then came a 45-minute weather delay due to lightning.

When the game resumed, Jay scored a 50-yard touchdown on an Ortega run for a 20-13 lead.

But Wooten wouldn’t be denied. He directed a 76-yard drive that ended when Ryan scampered in for a two-yard score for a 20-20 halftime tie.

On the opening drive of the second half, Marble Falls took the lead for good. Wooten found his brother for a 14-yard touchdown.

Green said he felt like his team was in control of the game late in the third quarter, about the time junior receiver Eric Cauble caught a 16-yard touchdown pass for a 34-27 lead.

Senior running back Royal Brown ran in a 35-yard touchdown, then Brennen Wooten called his own number for a 14-yard scoring run. Ryan added an eight-yard touchdown, and sophomore quarterback Cade Cool ran in a 19-yard touchdown.

By then, Green said, the Marble Falls offensive and defensive lines wore down Jay.

“Offensively, we didn’t have to throw the ball anymore,” he said.

He was especially pleased Marble Falls did not commit the drive-killing mistakes it did in Week 1. They had only one turnover that Jay turned into a touchdown.

But the Marble Falls offense came right back for a score of its own.

Green said he told his offense the defense was playing very well.

“We have to give them some help,” he said. “The more we practice and the more we play, the kids are going to get better. We didn’t have the missteps.”

Sophomore defensive back Sam Harkins was unstoppable. He had two interceptions and many pass deflections. The defense recorded at least four sacks and forced two turnovers on downs.

“(The defensive backs) made plays, they hit people,” Green said. “They tackled in space.”

Marble Falls returns home Sept. 12 to host Boerne High at Mustang Stadium, 2101 Mustang Drive in Marble Falls, at 7:30 p.m.
