MARBLE FALLS — The final play of the Marble Falls High School football team’s scrimmage against Kerrville Tivy on Aug. 22 made fans gasp and hold their breaths.

Trailing 14-9 with five seconds left on the Tivy 26, Mustangs junior quarterback Brennen Wooten found junior receiver Eric Cauble. Cauble was weaving his way to the end zone.

But just as he crossed the five, he was tackled.

That play showed what Marble Falls head coach Matt Green and his staff have been saying: Coaches want the Mustangs to believe they’re never out of a game, execute each play extremely well and do the little things championship teams do to succeed.

So despite not scoring, Green left the field in good spirits, commending the Antlers for what looks to be a playoff-bound team and his own players for forcing a punt and almost succeeding in scoring the winning touchdown in the final two minutes and 16 seconds.

“They’re a really good offensive team,” Green said about Tivy. “They return eight starters. I don’t know that, week in and week out, we’ll see a team that explosive.”

Tivy was able to score its two touchdowns on slant passes that went for 50 yards and 4 yards.

Marble Falls senior running back Royale Brown scored a 4-yard touchdown to begin the scrimmage’s live quarters.

Wooten started the scoring at the beginning of the controlled scrimmage by running to paydirt from 10 yards out.

Coaches said players struggled with conditioning during the scrimmage at Lampasas on Aug. 15. Green said he saw improvement in that area against Tivy.

“We made improvement,” he said. “We were better in the lanes than we were a week ago.”

To open the regular season, Marble Falls welcomes Burnet on Aug. 29 at 7:30 p.m. to Mustang Stadium, 2101 Mustang Drive.
