DRIPPING SPRINGS — The Marble Falls High School cross-country team began the season at the Dripping Springs Invitational on Aug. 23.
Neither varsity team earned an overall score because they did not have a fifth runner competing. The girls junior varsity team was fifth out of seven entries, while the boys junior varsity was sixth.
Two Mustangs finished in the top 10 to earn medals. They are Christian Ramirez, who was sixth at 19 minutes and 40 seconds, and Jose Jimenez at seventh place in 19:42.
Head coach Anthony Torns said the vast majority of the runners had solid finishes including Britney Deering at 21:57, Tincia Ware at 21:58 and Sydney Gibson at 22:01. All three had new personal records.
“For Sydney, that was her first time running that distance,” Torns said. “To run that time is very good. It shows progress for that side.”
The coach expressed surprise the varsity boys did not turn in better times, though he noted Ishmael Montoya finished in 18:49.
Torns said patience is the key right now. The runners are still adjusting to their new roles. For some, that means learning to lead instead of being led. For others, that means getting used to a faster pace at a longer distance.
“Overall, I was pleased,” he said. “It showed what we need to work on.”
In addition, Dripping Springs officials made the course 3.2 miles, which is the distance the University Interscholastic League requires Class 5A and 6A members to run. Torns said that was one reason why he wanted the Mustangs to compete.
“Our meets need to be 3.2 miles,” he said. “They have to get used to running that distance. If they’re not, they’re struggling.”
