Try something ‘wild’ at Spicewood Community Center barbecue Aug. 9

SPICEWOOD — Come and get it during the Spicewood Community Center Barbecue and silent auction Aug. 9.

The barbecue offers a unique culinary taste as organizers have decided to go with a wilder flavor.

“Traditionally, we’ve had brisket and chicken, but this year, we decided to do something different, and we’ll have a lot of wild game and exotic game,” said Virginia Ray, a Spicewood Community Center board member.

The event is 6-8 p.m. The barbecue includes cabrito, lamb, wild pig, axis deer, sausage and more. Meals cost $10 per adult and $5 per child under 6. People can purchase tickets at the door.

Though Spicewood remains a rather rural community today, during the early 20th century, the town boasted quite a bustling business atmosphere with a barbershop, a general store, a gin, two churches and a school. As people began moving to larger communities such as Marble Falls to the west and Austin to the east, the Spicewood population changed as did some of the local businesses.

But the old school building remained a big part of the community. Eventually, residents transformed it into the Spicewood Community Center.

“It remains an important part of the community to us,” Ray said. “It’s something that links us to our past but also gives us a place to come together today and hold different events and celebrations.”

People can rent it out for various activities, including bridal showers, meetings, receptions and family reunions.

Residents gather once a year at the community center for the Spicewood homecoming.

The building, however, does require maintenance and even renovations. Ray said the board gets some grant money, but the barbecue and silent auction provide funding to help support the community center.

Whether a Spicewood resident or not, everyone’s welcome to the event. It’s a great cause, but it’s also a great chance to sample some not-so-common barbecue.

The Spicewood Community Center is located at 7901 CR 404 in Spicewood. If traveling on Texas 71, turn north on Spur 191 in Spicewood and take it to CR 404. Turn left (west) at the intersection, and the community center will be about 200 yards down the road on the right.
