NEW BRAUNFELS — Several Marble Falls Tsunami swimmers have qualified for the state meet of the Texas Amateur Athletic Federation.

They finished in the top three of events at the Region 3 meet July 19 while also breaking a handful of meet records in the process.

Swimmers qualifying for state were William Slyker, Jed Montoya, Max Jones, London Castillo, Grant Nagle, Jadon Jones, Jake Gary, Jon Montoya, Tristan Johnson, Joshua Bryer, Nathan Ortiz, Jonathan Reyes, Aaron Jones, Taylor Ashbaugh, Sarah Williams, Christine Ashbaugh, Jessica Parsons and Mariah Jones.

Head coach Martha Montoya said she was pleased with what she saw, noting she was simply hoping for solid swims from her athletes.

“Not only did we place, but we broke records,” she said. “That was shocking. In the past, we really have been new to how to compete, when to compete and when to race. The kids put 100 percent into it and proved they understand what it means to compete.”

She attributes the success to preparation.

“The workouts have been challenging,” she said. “The experience has really moved them to compete at a different level.”

Montoya said she believes Region 3 is the most competitive.

“It’s the fastest region in the state,” she said. “I’m looking forward to seeing where we stand with the other different regions.”
