OBITUARY: Warren McCarney Newman, 78, of Horseshoe Bay dies July 6, 2014

Our beloved Warren lost his battle with pancreatic cancer July 6, 2014. Warren McCarney Newman was born in Cape Girardeau, Mo., on Feb. 20, 1936, the second son of Harry Bennett and Kathryn McCarney Newman.

He enjoyed many activities in his formative years. He was especially proud of being awarded the God and Country honor for special service to God and church and earning the rank of Eagle Scout at the age of 14.

Warren loved God, his family, his many friends, his country, golf, the University of Texas Longhorns, Horseshoe Bay, poker and life.

In life, Warren accomplished much. Upon receiving his degree in economics from Wesleyan University, where he was a member of Sigma Chi, he was employed by Sears Roebuck & Co. in its management department. His employment with Sears was interrupted by a three-year commitment to his country in the U.S. Army. Those three years fell between conflicts in the Far East, thus most of his Army days were spent in South Boston. He was proud to have been of service to our country.

During his time with Sears, he was assigned to various retail stores as a troubleshooter. In 1967, he left Sears, moved to Chicago to be near his brother, Dave, and started his career in banking in the municipal bond department at Northern Trust.  In 1976, he was offered a partnership in a newly formed municipal bond underwriting firm in Oklahoma City. In 1980, he finally made it to Texas. He continued his career in underwriting as vice president of Mercantile National Bank in Dallas and other underwriting establishments in Dallas until April 1994.

During his years in Dallas as an officer of the Municipal Bond Club of Dallas, he lobbied for and succeeded in the admission of women into the organization. It was his involvement in that organization that led him to Horseshoe Bay, where he continued his investment career starting July 1, 2001.

Outside of his professional career, he served as Scout Master in the Dallas region taking Scouts to Philmont, N.M., and numerous other less rigorous outings. He completed the Wichita Falls Hotter Than Hell 100 bicycle ride three consecutive years as well as numerous other bike rides across Central Texas. Also in his quest to live life to the fullest, he went bike riding in the mountains of Alaska, whitewater rafting in Alaska, rode the luge in New Zealand, climbed the Harbor Bridge in Sydney, went sky diving in San Marcos and zip-lining in Belize.

In “retirement,” he served the community tirelessly with Highland Lakes Texas Exes in every capacity from bartender to president; was treasurer of the Hill Country Men’s Golf Association for five years; organized hundreds of golf games for the Tuesday Golf Group; and coordinated Wednesday night poker games.

Warren is survived by his wife, Ruth; son, Chris and wife Shannon of Champagne, Ill.; daughters, Amber Harville and husband Mike of Houston, Becki Miles and husband Bill of Coppell and Candace Nguyen and husband Thu of Lakeway; brother, David Newman and wife Barbara of Riverside, Ill.; niece, Jenny White and husband Pat, also of Riverside; 11 grandchildren and one great-grandson.

A memorial service is 11 a.m. July 14 at The Church at Horseshoe Bay. A celebration of life will follow at noon at Quail Point.

In lieu of flowers, Warren requested remembrances be sent to The Church at Horseshoe Bay or Seton Highland Lakes Home Health/Hospice.
