BERTRAM — An interim police chief is leading the Bertram department while the city searches for a permanent replacement.

Officer Doug Wall will head the department after previous chief Tracy Weems resigned to take another position.

Weems resigned in late May and officially left the department June 30. Wall officially took over July 1.

City secretary Georgina Hernandez said the process to find a police chief could take four to six weeks. A month into that process, the city is still seeking a replacement.

“We’re still looking,” she said. “Still going through applications.”

Weems’ departure means the department is operating with three full-time officers. Wall, however, is still recovering from a motorcycle accident.

“He’s on light duty because of the motorcycle accident,” Hernandez said.
