Genealogy Fair welcomes online family sleuths

BURNET — When it comes to genealogy research, the Internet has opened doors for finding information and even simplified the process. But it also comes with challenges that can leave family researchers stymied and frustrated.
“There is a lot of incorrect information on the Internet, so you have to know how to check it and make sure it’s right,” said Angie Spangenberg of the Llano Uplift Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. “So it’s important to know how to do research on the Internet. It’s really changed how you do genealogy research.”
There are still many questions when it comes to Internet research, so the Llano Uplift Chapter is hosting a Genealogy Fair and Research Workshop 1-3 p.m. June 21 at the Herman Brown Free Library, 100 E. Washington St.
The featured speaker is Sharon Wolff, who is the Texas Daughters of the American Revolution vice chairwoman. She will be leading the program “Researching the Ever-Changing Internet.”
Spangenberg said while the Internet makes family research easier on several levels, you have to understand some of its nuances to get the most from it — and the most accurate information.
There are several genealogy sites online that, for a fee, provide avenues for much of the information. But Wolff’s discussion will focus on how to get the most from free sites.
“There’s a lot available for free when it comes to genealogy,” Spangenberg said. “There are some genealogy sites that have information, but (Wolff) will also go over how to use family sites and blogs and other ways.”
Along with the workshop, the event includes a fair, which will feature many other history and genealogy organizations including:
- Burnet Genealogy Society
- Burnet County Heritage Society (Fort Croghan)
- Kingsland Genealogy Society
- The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints Marble Falls Family History Center
- Daughters of the American Revolution
- Sons of the American Revolution
- Daughters of the Republic of Texas
- Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War 1861-1865
- United Daughters of the Confederacy
- United States Daughters of 1812
- Society of Mayflower Descendants
The event is free and open to the public. But officials would like people to pre-register, so they can have a good count because of space limitations. Contact Georgi Brochstein at (830) 798-9685 or georgi@zeecon.com to reserve a spot.
