Get set for annual Marble Falls Soapbox Classic

MARBLE FALLS — The Father’s Day weekend tradition is fast approaching, and it’s not too late to get involved.
The fifth annual Marble Falls Soapbox Classic on June 13-15 is still taking registrations for derby cars and sponsorships.
“Every year it’s like a big scavenger hunt (to find sponsors),” said Shannon Heep, executive director of the National Adult Soapbox Derby Association.
The derby begins June 13 with the Show and Shine parade of derby cars. Then, as the sun and temperatures go down, the cars race into the night down the Third Street hill.
Racing continues June 14, and a street dance follows that evening. Racing finals are June 15.
Food and drink vendors are on site all three days.
The three-day event is free to attend.
Heep said as preparations were under way for the derby’s fifth year, she was reflecting on the purpose of the event. In previous years, Heep said she has seen racers develop relationships that extend beyond derby weekend.
“We want to provide the community with the opportunity to come out and play and bring their families and celebrate Father’s Day weekend, and to do it downtown,” Heep said. “As we celebrate this year, we’re focusing a lot on what our purpose is, not just to race cars down Third Street.”
Registration and sponsorship forms can be found online at www.adultsoapboxderby.com or by calling (830) 385-9289.
