OBITUARY: Charlie Merle Scott, 89, of Buchanan Dam dies May 10, 2014

Charlie Merle Scott was born April 21, 1925, in Childress, Texas, to Charles Carlton and Ora Annie (Tucker) Scott. He died May 10, 2014.

He proudly served his country during World War II as a gunners mate 3rd Class in the Navy aboard the USS Colhoun. After returning from his service in Navy, he moved to Odessa, Texas, to work with his older brother, Clyde, as a custom homebuilder and remodeler.

At the Odessa Roller Rink, he met his true love, Carolyn R. Bradshaw. They were wed Dec. 17, 1948. They just celebrated 65 years together this past December. Together, they raised three daughters: Valerie, Elizabeth and Barbra.

While in Odessa, he and Carolyn were avid bowlers in a Monday night league for more than 25 years. They started dancing after the girls were married and made many wonderful memories dancing together at the VFW and the American Legion in Odessa.

In 1980, he and Carolyn moved to Buchanan Dam. They enjoyed more than 30 years in the lakeside subdivision of Greenwood Acres. They were members of Buchanan West Baptist Church. This last year was spent at the Oaks Nursing Home, where he made many friends.

Charlie was preceded in death by his parents; brother Clyde Scott; and sisters Velma Montgomery, Ada Lee Scott, Eva Norman, Lila Faye McGuire and Birdie Starr.

He is survived by wife, Carolyn; daughters, Valerie Thornton and husband Doak of Cedar Creek, Liz Roberson and husband Bill of Odessa and Barbra Pinner and husband Jerry of Levelland; brother Alvie Scott and wife Molly of Farmington, N.M.; grandchildren, Kelly Ferguson of Virginia Beach, Va., Kasey Stirling of Cedar Creek, Katherine Nelson and husband Shawn of Burnet, Chris Roberson and wife Summer of Round Rock, Stephanie Latham and husband Todd of Levelland, Trina Payton and husband Jimmy of Midland; and great-grandchildren Grace Liska, Megan and Allie Latham, Taylor Karsyn and Dylan Payton, Will and Brett Nelson, Ellie Hank and Samantha Roberson and Caden Bennett.

A funeral service was May 12 at Buchanan West Baptist Church with the Rev. John Taylor officiating. Serving as pallbearers were grandsons Chris Roberson, Shawn Nelson, Todd Latham and Jimmy Payton. Burial followed at Bluffton Cemetery with the Highland Lakes Honor Guard delivering military honors.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Lakeshore Branch Library, 7346 RR 261 Buchanan Dam, TX 78609; or Greenwood Acres POA Beautification, P.O. Box 132 Bluffton, TX 78607.
