OBITUARY: Joyce Lyvonne James, 84, of Sunrise Beach Village dies May 1, 2014

Joyce Lyvonne James, 84, of Sunrise Beach Village, Texas, passed away May 1, 2014. She was born to Walter and Maria (Sims) Badgett on Dec. 19, 1929, in Houston.

Joyce was an EMT for the Sunrise Beach Volunteer Fire Department and one of its inaugural first responders and a founder of Wish Upon a Star Foundation, a nonprofit second-hand store in Medina that served the needs of families at Christmas. She also delivered Meals on Wheels to elderly shut-ins, was a member of the Sunrise Beach Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary and was a volunteer for a doctor at X-Tattoo, which removed tattoos from gang members so they could start a new life.

She was a compassionate and loving Christian and enjoyed fishing, motorcycle racing, NASCAR and bird watching.

Mrs. James is survived by her son Barry James of Sunrise Beach; sisters Lue Shupe of Spirit Lake, Iowa, Sue Locust of Tucson, Ariz., and Lavern Gresham of Victoria; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Theo James; son Don Rick James; brother, Kelly “Buddy” Garrett; and sister Lottie Oldham.

Visitation is 11 a.m.-5 p.m. May 6 at Putnam Funeral Home, 145 Texas Ave. in Kingsland, (325) 388-0008. A graveside service is 1 p.m. May 7 at Sandy Mountain Cemetery in Sunrise Beach with Ken Barington officiating.
