LUBBOCK — The Llano High School boys golf team will make its first trip to the Class 3A state tournament in almost a decade after finishing third at the Class 3A Region I tournament April 14-15.

The last time the Yellow Jackets were at the state tournament was in 2005.

The team totaled 620 strokes, seven higher than second-place Lampasas, the team Llano beat for the District 8-3A title April 7.

“I do believe that it was experience that got us over the hump this year,” Llano head coach Mike McIntosh said. “These juniors have come close the last two years, and I believe that experience helped them.”

The state tournament is April 28-29 at Hyatt Regency Lost Pines Resort, 575 Hyatt Lost Pines Road in Lost Pines.

McIntosh took the players for a practice round there April 23. Some have already played the course.

Though he won’t be able to simulate the adrenaline and excitement of playing at the state tournament, the coach has some advice for his golfers.

“I think the boys can relax and play at state, and, hopefully, good things will happen for them,” he said. “It will be a totally different atmosphere, but the way they play the game is the same. That is what I will tell them before the round.”
