BURNET — The Burnet High School baseball team lost 12-5 to Liberty Hill in a District 8-3A game April 11.

With the loss, Liberty Hill now has first place in district all to itself, and Burnet and Llano will be in a showdown for second place at 7 p.m. April 15.

After taking a 1-0 lead in the first inning, the Panthers (19-5 overall, 6-1 district) took advantage of five walks in the third inning. In the end, Liberty Hill plated seven runs for a commanding lead.

The Bulldogs (12-9-3 overall, 5-2 district) responded with three runs in their half of the inning. But the Panthers added two runs in the fourth and two runs in the fifth to keep Burnet at bay.

“We faced adversity,” Burnet head coach Steven Shipley said.

When Burnet scored the three runs, Shipley said he felt momentum had turned back to his team’s favor.

“It felt like we were winning the game with the way we responded,” he said. “If we had shut them out the next couple of innings, I’m confident in saying we come back and beat them.”

The Bulldogs stranded eight runners, including six in the fourth, fifth and seventh innings.

“We had bases loaded with one out and scored one run,” Shipley said. “They had bases loaded and one out and scored six.”
