Ferdinand Bertelson Jr., 89, of Kingsland, Texas, passed away March 1, 2014. He was born to Ferdinand and Alice (Ammons) Bertelson in Cransfills Gap, Texas, on Nov. 24, 1924.
Fred proudly served in the U.S. Army and the Air Force during World War II and Korea. He was a master welder and worked in that field most of his working years. He was a member of the American Legion in Kingsland and the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Marble Falls. After his retirement, he was a greeter at Walmart in Marble Falls for several years. He enjoyed fishing.
He married Vera Woodward Young in 1999.
He is survived by his wife of 15 years, Vera Woodward Bertelson of Kingsland; children, Martin (Linda) Bertelson of Kingland, Kenneth (Donna) Bertelson of Midland, Keith (Debbie) Bertelson of Pecos, Christine (Roland) Gonzales of San Saba, Wanda (Harold) Clayton of Dallas, Linda Bertelson of Midland and Kathy Thompson of Dublin, Texas; the mother of his children, Grace Bertelson of Dublin; stepsons, Clarence Young of Horseshoe Bay and Lonnie Young of Kingsland; 14 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; brother, Kenneth (Edna) Bertelson of Austin; and sister, Mary Hunt of Fort Worth. Nieces and nephews also survive him.
A memorial service is 2 p.m. March 6 at Putnam Funeral Home, 145 Texas Ave. in Kingsland, (325) 388-0008. There will be family remembrances of Fred and honors by the Highland Lakes Honor Guard.
