TAYLOR — The Burnet High School softball team finished fourth at the Taylor Tournament on Feb. 27 and March 1.

The Lady Dawgs (11-4) defeated Austin Hyde Park 7-2, Jarrell 13-0, Taylor 4-3 and Austin McCallum 5-0 but lost 6-5 to Robinson and 9-4 to Giddings.

The loss to Robinson came down to a ball hit toward the right-field fence. The defender leapt to make the over-the-shoulder catch, but the ball bounced out of her glove, allowing the runner at second to score the winning run.

Last season, Robinson lost in a Class 3A regional final to eventual state champion Hudson.

“This was a very good game against a very good Robinson team,” Lady Dawgs head coach Corey Bledsoe said.

In the semifinal loss to Giddings, the two teams were tied headed into what turned out to be the final inning. Giddings was able to bat, but the Lady Dawgs did not because of the time limit on the game,  Bledsoe said.

Against Jarrell, Burnet recorded 10 hits in three innings to run-rule the Lady Cougars.

The Lady Dawgs had eight hits in three innings in beating Taylor.

Ashleigh Glover and Vanessa Escamilla were awarded all tournament. The tournament drew a total of 35 teams.

“Very good tournament, very good competition,” Bledsoe said. “We saw a lot of things we needed to see. I am very pleased with the heart, the pride and confidence in this team.”

The junior varsity came in fourth in its division, which had a total of 21 squads.
