KILLEEN — The Marble Falls High School girls soccer team defeated Killeen Ellison 4-0 on Jan. 22.

The Lady Mustangs scored three goals on dead balls, had two free kicks and one corner kick, all courtesy of a new feature in the offense, though head coach Trey Young didn’t elaborate on the changes.

In addition, Marble Falls posted its sixth shutout of the season.

“So the (defense) just keeps humming along,” Young said. “(I) liked the points off of dead balls and consistent defense.”

He called the first half sloppy, and he believes that’s because the Lady Mustangs had played four games at the Bastrop tournament Jan. 16-18.

“Think we had tournament hangover,” he said. “The second half was better. I told girls it’s the old cliche: Good teams find a way to win even when not at their best.”

He noted forward Emma Sharp and wing Britney Deering were bright spots on offense, and forward Macy Hoover has scored in almost every contest. Centerback Shelbi Wyatt “continues exceptional play,” he said.

Because of travel concerns, the Marble Falls junior varsity will not play in the Lake Travis tournament Jan. 24-25.

ROUND ROCK — The Marble Falls High School boys soccer team lost 3-0 to Round Rock Westwood to begin the Round Rock tournament Jan. 23.

The Mustangs will not play in the tournament Jan. 24 or Jan. 25, head coach Rick Hoover said.

Against Westwood, the Mustangs (7-3-1) played in cold temperatures and wet conditions, elements most of the athletes hadn’t before played in for the high school program.

Hoover said some of his players didn’t play because they’re still healing from injuries.

Still, he said the competition at this tournament should benefit his club.

“Playing the higher level teams is not always good for our record,” he said, “but I think it’s going to prepare us for district, and that is what it’s all about.”
