BURNET — The Burnet High School girls basketball team defeated Llano 51-27 on Jan. 14.
But the Lady Dawgs didn’t pull away from the Lady Jackets until the third period.
Burnet (14-9, 2-2) led 12-8 after the first period and 23-18 at halftime.
The start of the second half, however, launched a dominating Burnet performance with the Lady Dawgs outscoring the Lady Jackets 11-1.
“We played well with some changes, played well with some heart,” Burnet head coach Doug Messer said. “I was nervous with Llano. They’ve played people tight. They’ve been in a bunch of games. They’re good enough to beat you.”
He said his players limited their turnovers and rebounded the basketball well. Defensively, Messer complimented his squad’s defense on Llano freshman post Abby Spurgin, who made only two baskets during the contest, and Sarah Hasty, who scored 11 points in the first half and finished with a total of 18.
“I felt like we probably played the way we should play,” Messer said. “We held them to one in the third quarter and eight in the fourth. And seven points were from free throws. Our defense has to dictate offense for us. We got a lot off turnovers, and we shot a lot of shots. We were the aggressor.”

BURNET — The Burnet High School boys basketball team defeated Llano 49-38 on Jan. 14.
The Bulldogs (12-10, 2-0) took a 16-4 lead in the first period that provided the necessary cushion for the rest of the contest.
“We’ve been preaching they have everything they need to be successful,” Burnet head coach Roy Kiser said. “It’s a matter of discipline and doing things right. We just have to be consistent all the time.”
It also helped that senior post Clayton Baumgart almost outscored the Yellowjackets by himself with 33 points. He hit three 3-pointers, while Llano only scored one.
Still, the Yellowjackets trimmed the deficit to singles digits in the final period. Without the first period, Llano outscored Burnet 34-33 for the remainder of the game.
Kiser was pleased with the way his squad played defense.
“Llano is getting better every year,” he said. “We had a solid defensive effort. The last four minutes, we stayed with it.”
With the win, the Bulldogs remain atop the District 8-3A standings, but they travel to Lampasas on Jan. 17. The Badgers have a reputation of playing well at home.
“I think what I feel good about is we have an experienced team,” Kiser said. “They should be able to go into someone’s place and play with the same intensity as we do (at home).”
