Burnet girls basketball falls to Georgetown East View; prepares for district

JENNIFER FIERRO • PICAYUNE STAFF

BURNET — The Burnet High School girls basketball team lost 48-38 to Georgetown East View on Dec. 30.

The Lady Dawgs (12-7) trailed 12-8 after the first quarter and 27-16 at the half.

“Most of that was self-inflicted,” Burnet head coach Doug Messer said. “We had a couple of unforced turnovers and breakaways we didn’t convert. Other than that, we played pretty well.”

Just about every Lady Dawg scored. Now, the team needs to find at least two more consistent double-digit scorers to help junior guard Riley Scott shoulder the offensive responsibility, Messer said.

“We need to keep working for that,” he said. “I hate losing, but I felt like we played as good as we’ve been playing coming back after the (holiday) break.”

Burnet opens District 8-3A play at Brownwood, 2100 Slayden St. in Brownwood, at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 3. Fans can tune in to the game at KBEYFM.com/Bulldogs.

The Lady Lions are picked to finish in the top three of the district standings, Messer said.

“I think they’re better than they were last year,” he said. “They have almost everyone returning, they’re salty.”

The coach said the loss to East View helped his players refocus for the games that are now the most important of their season.

“I think we’re all right,” he said. “We had a great week of practice. I think we’re ready.”
