MARBLE FALLS — The Marble Falls High School girls basketball team lost 72-63 to Fredericksburg on Dec. 20.
The Lady Mustangs raced to an 18-5 lead after the first period thanks to a 7-1 run in the final minutes.
But foul trouble set in early in the second quarter, forcing Marble Falls coaches to change the lineup.
“Fouls just got crazy,” Lady Mustangs head coach Chris Jost said. “(Officials) started calling fouls on both ends. They got us in a hole.”
By the end of the first half, Marble Falls led 36-31. The Lady Mustangs had 21 fouls, while the Lady Billies had 16. Marble Falls was 19 of 29 from the foul line, while Fredericksburg was 17 of 33.
With several Marble Falls starters in foul trouble, reserves started the third period. That’s when Fredericksburg seized control, outscoring the Lady Mustangs 15-6 in the final five minutes for a 54-46 lead that led to the win.
“The strategy was we had all five subs, but we were still able to be aggressive defensively,” Jost said. “Those girls were working for district playing time. They had an opportunity to show what they can do. We saw good things; we saw bad things.”
He said the Lady Billies play an aggressive style that draws fouls. In all, both teams attempted 54 free throws each with Marble Falls hitting 36 and Fredericksburg connecting on 30.
Jost said his players enjoyed two solid practices before the contest.
“We were fully prepared for what (the Lady Billies) want to do,” he said. “We just didn’t execute. Veterans have to step up.”
