BURNET — The Marble Falls High School girls basketball team defeated Burnet 53-34 on Dec. 3.
The Lady Mustangs (6-4) began the game by outscoring the Lady Dawgs 15-7 in the first period and 25-12 at the half.
Marble Falls used a full-court pressure defense and limited second-chance points by Burnet (6-5). As a result, the Lady Mustangs outscored the Lady Dawgs in every period. Even when it looked like Burnet would end the third period on a positive, Marble Falls regained momentum with a half-court shot that swished through the net by senior guard Sarah Stripling.
Stripling and Burnet junior guard Riley Scott each did their part, scoring their season averages and getting teammates involved.
“Riley’s a competitor,” Burnet head coach Doug Messer said. “We’ve been putting up more points. I was happy with the way we handled their pressure. I like seeing us do that. We have district (teams) that run the same thing. With the way they play, you have to be hard-nosed.”
Marble Falls was 21-of-28 on free throws with Stripling connecting on a perfect 16-of-16 attempts. Senior forward Haley Stephens added 11 points
“I’ve only had one other player do that,” Marble Falls head coach Chris Jost said. “I thought Haley had a solid game in getting double figures. I thought we had some opportunities inside we didn’t take advantage of.
“Scott is going to do what she’s going to do,” he added. “(Our pressure) took them out of their comfort zone.”
