MARBLE FALLS — The Marble Falls High School girls basketball team defeated the No. 2 team in Class 2A on Nov. 21 at its own American Bank of Texas Tournament.

The Lady Mustangs (5-1) beat Wall, 44-33, to finish the first day of the event at Max Copeland Gym with a 2-0 record and in the winner’s bracket.

“We’re back on track,” Marble Falls head coach Chris Jost said. “I feel like we got better. We were more prepared.”

Against Wall (8-1), the Lady Mustangs took a 12-6 lead in the first quarter that ballooned to 26-15 by the half.

After the game, Jost looked at the scorebook and noted two things that led to the win: Marble Falls only had 12 fouls and limited Wall to 12 field goals in 32 minutes.

“When they tried to make a run, they were gassed,” Jost said. “When you have a cushion, you can play steady.”

By staying on the winner’s side of the bracket, the Lady Mustangs will face District 25-4A foe Cedar Park Vista Ridge, the No. 3-ranked team in the Class 4A poll of the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches.

And no matter the result, Marble Falls will end the tournament by playing either Brock, the No. 1 team in Class 2A, or Kerrville Tivy, the No. 21 team in Class 4A.

“It’ll be competitive,” Jost said. “(The victory against Wall) was a good win. We’re happy to be in the semifinals. No matter what happens, we figured some things out. And the more times we play Vista Ridge, the better.”
