Cooks get ready for Roundup for Hope Chuckwagon Cookoff in Marble Falls

MARBLE FALLS — There’s nothing like cooking over an open fire that comforts the soul. And now participants of the Roundup for Hope Chuckwagon Cookoff-Music Jamboree will stoke their fires to help provide solace for struggling families in need of emotional, trauma and minor medical care.
The event Oct. 11-13 will benefit A Place of Hope, a comprehensive medical, pharmaceutical and counseling center that includes a charitable healthcare clinic and emotional trauma center.
The facility, 1009 Falls Parkway, is affiliated with Wounded Heart Ministries and operates as a charitable healthcare clinic. It opened in April 2008.[box]IF YOU GO
WHAT: Roundup for Hope Chuckwagon Cookoff and Fundraiser
SCHEDULE: Oct. 11 — catered dinner and auction are 6-9 p.m.
Oct. 12 — gates open 10 a.m.; chuck wagon lunch for $10 is noon-1:30 p.m.; live music all day; dance for $20 is 7-10 p.m.
Oct. 13 — gospel fest is 8:30 a.m.-noon; chuck wagon breakfast for $5 is 9 a.m.; cowboy church is 10 a.m. [/box]
Johnson Park, 230 Ave. J South, provides the backdrop for the event, which kicks off Oct. 11 with ground-fire, chuckwagon-style cooking.
For an entry fee, organizers provide the fixings, which include meat, beans, onions, potatoes, flour, eggs and milk.
Participants then compete in categories such as food preparation, wagon authenticity and camp layout and for awards for friendliness and cooperation in the spirit of Western culture.
A live auction is 6-9 p.m. Oct. 11 with proceeds going to A Place of Hope. The public is invited for a $10 donation to dine on chuck wagon meals on Oct. 12. The final day, Oct. 13, will feature a cowboy breakfast, church and gospel music.
