Marble Falls tennis rallies for victories; district next

MARBLE FALLS — Just when it looked as if their team tennis matches were lost, the Marble Falls High School Mustangs got some outcome-changing wins.

Marble Falls trailed Cedar Park High 7-9 with three matches remaining and rallied for a 10-9 victory a day after the doing the same against Dripping Springs.

Regan Hanish and Afton Otwell each won their matches to even the score. And AnneClaire McCannon was on her way to capturing her match with a 6-2, 5-3 lead. She eventually won it by winning the tiebreaker 7-4.

“This final match wasn’t about who would hit the ball out first,” Marble Falls head coach Jeff Savage said. “Rather, it was who would force the error or hit an outright winner. High-quality match.”

Tied at 9-9 with Dripping Springs on Sept. 26, the Mustangs’ fortunes lay with a newcomer to the program. And she delivered.

Ashton Otwell scratched out the win in girls singles to propel the Mustangs to a 10-9 victory.

Savage also was pleased with the teamwork he saw from the doubles teams in combining power serves and setting up partners at the net. He said Hannah Dockery played her doubles match with Madison Dyer with a backup racquet after a string busted on her normal racquet.

The comeback wins say a lot about the team, he said.

“Really shows how much the Mustangs have developed mentally over the course of this season,” Savage said. “The team is playing with a lot of grit and not giving up many free points.”

The Mustangs begin District 25-4A tournament play at 4 p.m. Oct. 1 at Marble Falls High Schoo, 2101 Mustang Drive.
